Current Characters: Naoya, Ryu
Character: Chai
Canon: Hi-Fi Rush, post-ending but before secret ending
Age: 25
Background Information: A little sparse, but it'll do.
Personality: Personality: There's always that one guy.
The slacker, the one who puts in no effort and wants to skate on by in life. Chai is that guy. Or at least, he was.
At the beginning of the game Chai is a loser, someone who's permanently disabled and obviously insecure about it, and self-centered. He doesn't care about how he's inconveniencing people or even putting them in danger (for example by ruining Peppermint's plans to stay undercover because he wanted to brag). By the end of the game Chai is... mostly still those things, but a bit less self-centered - he actually cares about his friends and even has them in the first place. He seems to unlock empathy towards people as he struggles against an outside enemy with them - it's not easy for a small rag-tag bunch of losers to fight against the biggest company in the world. Peppermint especially helped him to open up by constantly pushing him into doing the right thing and not taking the lazy path. By the end of the game he's pretty much willing to die for them (in that sort of mid-twenties uncertain about your own mortality way), jumping in the path of lasers for people he was fighting like twenty minutes ago. He's still got that cockiness of being sure he's the main character, though - he's not about to change who he is because of someone else, but he's absolutely now the kind of person to go to bat for his friends.
Despite everything Chai is actually pretty good at making allies. Sure his personality can be grating (delusions of grandeur, literally filling out his application with a listed job of "ROCKSTAR" and cutting ahead in line, repeated tactless comments, constant need to have things spelled out to him, blurting things out) but he gets the job done when it needs to get done. 'Unconventional' is a key word to describe him - his attitude, his friendships, his entire trajectory. For example, he's better at thinking on the move rather than in a planning meeting, he tries to keep from dwelling in past failures (despite his stated and implied inferiority complex), and while he's stupid he makes use of his stupidity by leading with heart forward rather than head. He makes friends with people older than him, younger than him, and eventually manages to even win over one of his enemies. (It helps that he saved her life, something he did without hesitation. He's not as selfish as he or others might think he is.) His imagination is powerful and he's not afraid to use it, coming up with new attacks on the fly and new ways to use both his and his allies' abilities.
Chai's also got a kind side to him, though it usually takes a little warming up to get him there. He starts out as pretty flippant to others in the game, but by the midpoint the team has affected him enough that he's willing to give a chance to someone who captured him and tried to interrogate him. He doesn't care about where a person comes from, just as long as they aren't a jerk. He reassures Peppermint that it doesn't matter who her brother is (the 'evil mastermind' behind this mind control program), it only gives them a reason to fight harder. He's capable of inspirational speeches (in his own somewhat punny and slightly self-centered way) and while he might not be the brains behind an operation he sure can be the heart. At the end, he's the hero of the day and when he could be gloating like he would have at the beginning of the game he instead... apologizes for messing up Peppermint's plans and tries to leave without a reward, feeling like he doesn't belong at Vandelay. He's still confident but he's more aware of his limitations and where he needs help and when, and where his skills lie. Ultimately it's that attitude that lands him a job at the reborn Vandelay - they need an ambassador for their projects who's willing to reach out to people and drag them along with a smile, not shove them in line for a robot limb.
(He's still not getting paid, though.)
Ultimately while Chai is a dropout slacker loser he'd rather look to tomorrow than today. He takes what's handed to him, accepts the parts he can use, and makes something out of it - whether that's a guitar out of trash or a friend out of an enemy. His best qualities might be hard to see sometimes, but he's resourceful and energetic and willing to stand up to even the most powerful company in the world if it's needed to complete his goals.
Abilities & Inventory: The first and most obvious ability Chai's got is his robotic arm. It's magnetic and inside it comes with a trash grabber. The grabber isn't attached so it can be used as the handle for creations, if you were so inclined. Chai is so inclined. He can magnetize any scrap metal around him and form it into his 'trash guitar'. Being made of metal it hits quite hard. He also has a number of moves he can pull off with it, listed and here. Obviously no abilities that involve his allies will be able to be pulled off, but he can still smash things and juggle (lighter) enemies in the air.
He sees everything as synced to the beat of whatever music is playing either in his MP3 player in his chest or the music around him. This helps him to dodge attacks and time his movements, likely coming off as weirdly preternatural to other people. It creates an almost 'sixth sense' that he can use to his advantage.
Even aside from the arm, Chai is weirdly durable and limber. This is probably due to 'rule of funny' but he can take laser sabers and buzzsaws and lava to the face, get shot out of a cannon, and break through glass without so much as a scratch. This will be toned down to a bit more realistic though still durable just for fairness.
He can also sync up with any sort of sound-related fields around him, as seen when he breaks through the harmonic force field set up by Kale.
Suitability & Plans: Chai's an easygoing guy which makes him good to bounce CR off of - he's also an idiot which makes for some fun CR. He's not afraid to be antagonistic, but he's not outright mean to the point of making threads unpleasant. Giving him room to learn and grow and continue becoming a better person (because he spent less than a week in canon probably) would be great.
He's friendly and inventive, probably leading to some pretty cool dreamotion abilities, and his musical tics will probably either endear or annoy other people. Which is fun! I'm totally willing to be creative alongside other people. ... And maybe cause some sort of music-based shenanigans in the future.
Inventory: Clothes, arm, some spare gears, his Vandelay Custom guitar.
